Girls soccer: Tonight’s area region finals breakdown — Feb. 14

Here are the capsules for tonight’s area region final matchups. The winners advance to Friday’s state semifinals.

Class 7A

Region 2

Lakewood Ranch (19-0-1) at Palm Harbor University (18-0), 7

One of the most anticipated matchups of the season between nationally ranked, unbeaten programs. Both are among the top three in the class (the host Hurricanes are No. 2 and the Mustangs are No. 3) and the top 20 in the nation (PHU is No. 11, and Lakewood Ranch is No. 19) according to MaxPreps. Do not expect a lot of scoring. The Hurricanes have allowed just six goals all season. The Mustangs have given up 13.

Class 6A

Region 3

Land O’ Lakes (15-5-3) at Sunlake (12-2-3), 7

This is the third meeting between the rivals. They played to a tie (4-4) in December, and the Gators won the second matchup 2-1 last month. The host Seahawks are 5-0-3 at home this season. Land O’ Lakes, meanwhile, is 6-0-1 on the road.

Class 5A

Region 2

Cypress Creek (14-5) at Daytona Beach Seabreeze (15-7), 7

The Coyotes, winners of four straight, are having one of their best seasons in school history. To keep the streak going, Cypress Creek has to get past Seabreeze, which has won five straight matches by a combined 25-1.

Class 4A

Region 3

Academy of the Holy Names (10-6-2) at Lakeland McKeel Academy (15-4-1), 7

This is the third meeting between the teams. The Jaguars won the first one in December (1-0), and the host Wildcats won the rematch 2-1 in last month’s Class 4A, District 10 final. Defense is key for Academy of the Holy Names, which has allowed just three goals in its last seven matches.

Class 3A

Region 2

Tampa Catholic (17-3) at Montverde Academy (12-2-2), 7

The Crusaders have a difficult task going on the road to face the Eagles, who are ranked No. 1 in the class and No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps. Tampa Catholic prepared for this situation by playing a challenging schedule that included plenty of teams in the playoffs this year.

Class 2A

Region 3

Fort Myers Evangelical Christian (13-2-1) at Shorecrest (12-4-2), 7

The Chargers, who are in the region finals for the fourth straight season, are trying to reach their third title match during that span. They can take the next step by getting past Evangelical Christian, which has won seven straight matches by a combined 38-7.
