Softball: Canterbury to host inaugural Coach K Bayly Memorial Tournament on Saturday

Canterbury is hosting a three-team softball tournament on Saturday to honor former Countryside coach Kaylyn Bayly, who died last year after a battle with dementia.

The Crusaders, along with Countryside and Mount Dora, decided to play in the inaugural Coach K Bayly Memorial Tournament. Mount Dora coach James Bayly is Kaylyn’s brother.

Donations from the tournament will help support a $750 scholarship awarded to a senior from each of the participating schools that best exemplify the values Kalyn taught on the softball field.

Kaylyn, a former two-sport standout at Lakewood, returned to her alma mater as a volleyball coach before coming to Countryside.

With the Cougars, Kayln spent time coaching volleyball and softball. She led Countryside to a pair of state final four volleyball appearances (2000-04) and guided the softball program to a trip to the state title game in 2016. The Cougars lost to Bartow 5-2 in 11 innings.

She stopped coaching a few years later to deal with the early stages of frontotemporal dementia.

Here is the schedule for Saturday’s games.

Countryside vs. Canterbury, 10 a.m.

Mount Dora Christian vs. Countryside, noon

Mount Dora Christian vs. Canterbury, 2 p.m.
