Flag football: Tampa Bay area buzz — March 20

Tampa Bay Top 10 Rankings

Not much changed considering most teams were idle during spring break last week. Robinson, the defending state Class 1A champion, remains No. 1. Four other teams in the top 10 (Alonso, Lennard, Steinbrenner and Osceola) are still undefeated. There could be some movement with several key matchups involving ranked teams this week.

Tampa Bay area player of the week

QB Haleigh Self, Sr., Wharton

The three-sport athlete has become a prolific passer for the Wildcats. Two weeks ago, she threw for a combined 493 yards and 10 touchdowns in wins over Freedom and Strawberry Crest.

Fans were impressed.

Self won the Tampa Bay area flag football player of the week poll with 39 percent of the votes (157) to beat out Steinbrenner’s Maddie Bridges, who had 26 percent (104 votes).

Coaching milestone

Two weeks ago, Steinbrenner coach Gregory Puskas became the sixth flag football in Hillsborough County to reach 100 career victories.

The milestone came in a 46-6 victory over Leto. The Warriors were prepared to celebrate, presenting Puskas with a shirt and cupcakes afterward.

Steinbrenner currently is 5-0 and plays Freedom on Tuesday and Riverview on Thursday before playing in a tournament this weekend.

Team milestone

By now, the accomplishments of Robinson’s varsity flag football team are well-known.

The Knights set the state record with 55 consecutive victories, a streak that ended last year. They also have won six straight state titles and seven overall, the most in state history.

The success can be attributed partly to a junior varsity program that has provided plenty of playmakers at the next level.

Two weeks ago, the jv program hit an impressive milestone.

By beating Plant in the annual rivalry matchup, Robinson’s jv recorded its 100th consecutive victory.

The last loss came in 2011 against the Panthers.

Today’s games

What to watch
Lennard (4-0) at Robinson (3-0), 7:30

The Longhorns have been impressive, winning their first four games by a combined 72-32. Now, comes one of the biggest tests of the season with a matchup against defending 1A state champion Robinson. As expected, the Knights have been dominant, recording three straight shutouts to open the season – and outscoring foes by a combined 114-0. Lennard is capable of staying with Robinson, even pulling off the upset. Last year, the Longhorns lost 27-25 to the Knights in one of their two matchups.
