Track and field: East Lake’s Sophie Haag owns nation’s top time in 100 meters

Last week, East Lake’s Sophie Haag ran against some of the state’s best sprinters in the 100 meters at the IMG Spring Break Invitational.

The senior got off to a solid start, racing past her competitors – and to the top of the national leaderboard.

Haag, the defending champion in the event, took first place in a wind-aided 11.41 seconds, a time that ranks first in the state and nationally as of last week according to MileSplit.

It was quite a leap for the Miami recruit, who set a personal record. Haag ended up shaving 0.25 seconds off her previous best time this season and 0.28 seconds off her winning time from last year’s IMG meet.

“It was big for her,” East Lake coach Britt Taylor said of Haag’s nationally ranked time. “She really has been trending upwards these last few weeks. She’s got a lot left in her, too.”

This weekend, Haag will try to improve upon that time when she competes at the FSU Relays.
