Hollins defends PCAC title

After going 31 years without winning a Pinellas County Athletic Conference title, Hollins has now won two straight.

Better still, the Royals did it by beating two-time defending state semifinalist Dunedin both times.

Last week, Hollins rallied to defend its title. Down 2-1, the Royals scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning and added two more runs in the sixth to win 5-2.

Bradley Hill went 3-for-3 and Teagan Davies and Alex Miller each had two hits for Hollins. Teammates Riley McDonald and Brady Perri each drove in two runs.

A year ago, the Royals used the momentum from their elusive conference title to win their first district championship since 1996 and reach the region final.

Tonight, Hollins goes for another district title when it faces Clearwater in the Class 5A-10 quarterfinals.

Two former area standouts – Chase Achuff (Osceola) and Sean Fluke (Fivay) – play for the Party Animals, the Savannah Bananas’ opponent during its road tour that included a two-day stop in Tampa this past weekend.

Achuff and Fluke are among six players from Florida currently on the Party Animals’ roster.

TBT speedster sets stolen base record

Javion McKay, one of Tampa Bay Tech’s top receiving threats, is a dual-sport athlete who uses his speed to swipe bases at an impressive pace.

McKay has set the school record with 26 stolen bases this season. He can add to that total on Tuesday when the Titans face Armwood in the Class 6A, District 9 quarterfinals.

What to watch

St. Petersburg (10-11) vs. Northeast (14-11), 4 (at Seminole)

The longtime rivals renew their rivalry in the Class 5A, District 10 tournament.

Last month, the Vikings rallied from a 3-1 deficit, scoring two runs in the sixth inning and another in the ninth to beat the Green Devils 4-3 in the teams only meeting in the regular season.

St. Petersburg, the No. 5 seed, has gone through some wild steaks. After winning six straight games, the Green Devils finished the regular season with three straight losses.

Northeast, the No. 5 seed, also is trying to get back on track after losing to three of its last four games.
