Baseball: 5A-2A Region quarterfinal breakdown — May 9

Here are the capsules for the area teams playing in tonight’s region quarterfinals. The winners advance to the region semifinals on Friday.

Class 5A

Region 2

No. 7 Zephyrhills (16-8) at No. 2 Sebring (21-6), 7

The Bulldogs had their four-game win streak end with a 7-6 loss in nine innings to Wesley Chapel in the 5A-8 district final. The Blue Streaks also are coming off a one-run loss in nine innings in their district final, snapping their eight-game win streak.

No. 6 Daytona Beach Seabreeze (13-10) at No. 3 Wesley Chapel (15-11), 7

The Wildcats, the 5A-8 district champion, have won four of their last five games – three by two runs or less. The Sandcrabs also have some momentum after winning five of their past six games, including three straight to climb above .500.

Region 3

No. 8 North Fort Myers (13-14) at No. 1 Jesuit (23-4), 7

After enduring a seven-game losing streak to close the regular season, the Red Knights got hot when it counted, winning three straight games to take home the 5A-11 district title. Keeping that streak going will be tough against the Tigers, who are ranked first in the class, third overall in the state and 14th nationally by MaxPreps.

No. 4 Seminole (21-6) at No. 5 Naples (19-7),7

The Warhawks, led by a quality pitching staff, have won 13 of their past 15 games. Those arms will be tested against the Eagles, who have been averaging seven runs per game.

No. 7 Hollins (16-11) at No. 2 Osceola (20-6), 7

The teams split their first two meetings this year. The Royals won the first one 4-1. The Warriors prevailed 1-0 in the rematch in the 5A-10 semifinals. That helped Osceola take home the district title. Expect another low-scoring game.

Class 4A

Region 2

No. 8 Nature Coast (15-9-1) at No. 1 North Marion (22-5), 7

The Sharks are 5-1-1 in their last seven games and have recorded two shutouts during the stretch. The Colts, ranked No. 3 in the class by MaxPreps, have won three straight.

No. 5 Satellite Beach Satellite (15-7) at No. 4 Hernando (22-4), 7

The host Leopards, the 4A-6 champions, have scored six or more runs in each of their last five games, all wins. The Scorpions, meanwhile, are coming off a loss in the 4A-8 district final that snapped their three-game win streak.

Region 3

No. 8 Estero (14-11) at No. 1 Dunedin (18-7), 7

The Wildcats have struggled on the road, going 4-5. That gives an advantage to the Falcons, who have won their past two games by a combined 26-0 to take home the 4A-11 title.

No. 6 Robinson (11-13) at No. 3 Jefferson (18-7), 7

This is the fourth meeting between the teams this season. The host Dragons won the previous three, including last week’s 4A-10 district final.

Class 3A

Region 2

No. 8 Bell Creek Academy (18-7) at No. 1 Calvary Christian (23-4), 7

The Panthers’ loss snapped their nine-game win streak. Getting back on track could be difficult against the Warriors, who ranked first in the class and seventh in the state by MaxPreps.

No. 5 Clearwater Central Catholic (13-12) at No. 4 Fort Myers Bishop Verot (18-9), 7

The Marauders are trying to rebound after losing three of their last four games. The host Vikings have won seven of their last eight games, including the past two in the 3A-8 district tournament by a combined 27-0.

No. 7 Fort Meade (17-9) at No. 2 Tampa Catholic (20-7), 7

In their last two losses, the Miners have scored a combined one run. Generating more offense will be a challenge against the Crusaders’ talented pitching staff.

No. 6 Avon Park (15-11) at No. 3 Berkeley Prep (20-8), 7

After losing their final two regular season games, the Red Devils turned things by winning straight for the 3A-7 district title. The Buccaneers, the 3A-5 district champions, have won 10 straight games.

Class 2A

Region 2

No. 3 Orangewood Christian (21-5) at No. 6 Bishop McLaughlin (14-5), 7

The Rams, ranked No. 9 in the class by MaxPreps, have lost two of their last three games. The host Hurricanes are more than capable of beating quality teams with victories over Berkeley Prep and Calvary Christian.

Region 3

No. 5 Seffner Christian (17-5) at No. 4 Sarasota Out-of-Door (19-7), 7

The Crusaders, the 2A-10 district champions, are one of the hottest teams in the area with 12 straight wins. Now comes a tough task with a road game against the Thunder, ranked eighth in the class by MaxPreps.

No. 7 Carrollwood Day (14-12) at No. 2 Northside Christian (21-6), 7

The Patriots were shut out for just the third time this season in the 2A-10 final. Getting the offense back on track will be a challenge against the Mustangs, ranked fifth in the class by MaxPreps.
