Baseball: 7A-6A region quarterfinal breakdown — May 10

Here are the capsules for the area teams playing in tonight’s region quarterfinals. The winners advance to the region semifinals on Saturday.

Class 7A

Region 2

No. 8 Sarasota (19-8) at No. 1 Plant (17-7), 7

The Panthers, ranked No. 7 in the class by MaxPreps, are looking to bounce back after losing two of their last three games. The Sailors allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh inning in a loss to Venice in the 7A-8 district final that snapped their three-game win streak.

No. 6 Alonso (18-8) at No. 3 Durant (19-5), 7

The Ravens, the 7A-7 district champions, enter the playoffs on a four-game win streak. The host Cougars, ranked No. 8 in the class by MaxPreps, relied on their quality pitching staff, which allowed a combined one run in two en route to a 7A-6 district title.

Class 6A

Region 2

No. 5 Wiregrass Ranch (15-6) at No. 4 Land O’ Lakes (21-6), 8

This is the fourth meeting between the rivals. The Gators two of the first three matchups, including a 17-2 victory in last week’s 6A-5 district title game. That extended Land O’ Lakes’ current win streak to eight games.

Region 3
No. 8 Plant City (14-12) at No. 1 Sickles (25-2), 7

The Gryphons, ranked No. 2 in the class by MaxPreps, have won 17 straight games, currently the longest streak in the area. One of the victories in that stretch came via a shutout against the Raiders last month.

No. 5 Lennard (17-9) at No. 4 Bloomingdale (17-8), 7

This is the third meeting between the teams. The Bulls won the first two, including a 4-1 victory in last week’s 6A-11 district final. Bloomingdale has now won four straight games, the team’s longest streak since the beginning of the season.

No. 2 East Lake (22-4) at No. 7 Riverdale (18-8), 7

Though the Eagles are the No. 2 seed in the region, they have to travel after losing to Sickles in the 6A-10 district final, which snapped their 12-game win streak. Pitching is the key for East Lake, which has allowed just nine runs in its last 13 games. The Raiders, the 6A-12 district champions, have won four straight games.

No. 6 Palmetto Ridge (18-7) at No. 3 Gaither (20-6), 7

The visiting Bears have scored four runs or less in four of their last five games. That could be a problem against the Cowboys, who have a deep and talented pitching staff that helped them win the 6A-9 district title last week.
