Softball: Tonight’s region finals breakdown — May 19

Here are the capsules for the area teams playing in tonight’s region finals. The winners advance to next week’s state semifinals in Clermont.

Class 7A

Region 2

No. 2 Windermere (24-3) at No. 1 Plant (25-4), 4:30

The top two teams in the region and the top three in the state square off. The Panthers, ranked second in the class by MaxPreps, have won 17 straight games, the last five by two or less runs. The Wolverines, ranked third in the state, are on a seven-game win streak. Six of those wins were by seven or more runs, including three by double digits.

Class 6A

Region 2

No. 5 Land O’ Lakes (18-11) at No. 3 Bloomingdale (18-7), 7

The Gators are trying to make the state semifinals for the second time in the past three seasons. After losing the 6A-5 district final to Sickles in 10 innings, Land O’ Lakes rebounded to win its first two playoff games, including a victory over Mitchell in the region semifinals to exact revenge from a loss to its rival in last year’s region final. The Bulls, ranked sixth in the class by MaxPreps, have won six straight games. They are trying to make the state semifinals for the first time since 2014 when they won their second title in school history.

After starting the season 11-8, the Royal Knights have won eight straight games and are one win away from reaching the state semifinals for the first time since 2004. But it will not be easy. The Bloodhounds, the top-ranked team in the region, have won their last four games by a combined 40-6.

That streak includes six teams that either made or are currently still in the playoffs. The Vikings, the fourth ranked team in the class, have won four straight games. They have recorded three straight shutouts and allowed just one run during that stretch.
