Track and field: Berkeley Prep’s Ellis Weekley named 2A girls athlete of the year

Berkeley Prep’s Ellis Weekley, who capped off her high school career by winning three state titles last month, was named the Class 2A girls track athlete of the year by the Florida Dairy Farmers.

Weekley, a senior, took first in the 100 meter hurdles (13.87 seconds), the 400 hurdles (1:01.47) and the long jump (18 feet, 3 ¾ inches) at the 2A state meet. She also set school records in all three events.

Her performance helped the Buccaneers finish fourth as a team at the 2A meet, which tied Cambridge Christian (1A) for the best finish among area girls teams in any classification.

The Florida Dairy Farmers winners in each classification were selected through voting from a statewide panel of girls track and field coaches and media representatives. They are now eligible to be named the overall winner in the state, which will go through another round of voting and likely be announced next week.
