Football: The 2023 Pinellas County Quarterback Guide (Classes 4-3M) — July 24

Last season was a notable one for area quarterbacks with many setting school records for passing yards and touchdowns, all while leading their teams in deep playoff runs. This season could be memorable, too, with plenty of signal callers returning to contending teams. Here is the breakdown in Pinellas County in Classes 4-3M to get ready for the season.

Veteran signal caller

Largo’s Jeremy Thomas is the only returning Pinellas County public school quarterback who led his team to the region finals last year.

Experience at the position helped Thomas during the Packers’ deep playoff run.

After all, Thomas is a two-year starter who has thrown for a combined 18 touchdowns during that span.

He has a good shot to improve upon those numbers given Largo’s depth at the skill positions. The Packers return their top two running backs and two of their top three receivers.

Dual threats

St. Petersburg’s Jefferey Jones and Palm Harbor University’s Will Seibert, both juniors, each are capable of gaining big chunks of yards on the ground.

Jones ran for 1,381 yards last year, the fourth-highest total in the county, including running backs. He also finished with 15 rushing touchdowns.

Seibert ended up with 819 yards rushing last season, including four games of 100 or more yards, and eight touchdowns on the ground.

Their ability to run – and pass – helped their teams go through remarkable transformations.

The Green Devils won seven games last season, three more than their previous three seasons combined. The Hurricanes went 6-4, their first winning season since 2016.

Two better than one

Northeast’s Mario Plummer, who threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns last year, has already been named the starting quarterback.

But Trey Whirley, a transfer from Clearwater, will see playing time.

Vikings coach Shawn Davis said he wants to play both to guard against injury.

For the past two seasons, Davis watched as his starting quarterbacks – D’Angelo Hutchinson in 2021 and Evan Jacobson last year – both were sidelined with injuries.

“Mario is our guy, but Trey will get some time at quarterback,” Davis said. “We’re going to need both during the season.”

Quarterback battle

Last season, East Lake had the luxury of having two senior quarterbacks, Jake Bechtel and Caleb Coburn.

The Eagles will be considerably younger at the position with sophomore Eli Millian and freshman Landen Holley.

Millian was the junior varsity starting quarterback a year ago. Holley, meanwhile, has picked offers from Florida, UCF and USF.

End zones

Jack Moraniec, a senior, will take over as the starting quarterback at Osceola and try to help the program defend its district title….Another district champion, Pinellas Park, is turning to Jaden Casanova, last year’s junior varsity who won the job after a strong showing in the spring.
