Football

From kicks to carries

Jesuit’s Justin Thurman is not your typical running back. He is a third-degree black belt who spent nine years honing his skills in Tae Kwon Do starting in the first grade.

The junior, who committed to Notre Dame earlier this week, said the agility, body weight training and mind-strength discipline he learned in that sport translates well in football, especially as a running back.

After spending the past season as an understudy to Joquez Smith, now at Temple, Thurman is ready to take on a more prominent role in the Tigers’ backfield.

That leaves little time for other sports.

Thurman said he has not participated in Tae Kwon Do since his family moved from St. Louis last year.
