Baseball

Miller brothers advance to Class A in Florida State League

The Miller brothers, Jackson and Aidan, have both made impressive strides in their professional baseball careers.

The former Mitchell High standouts were drafted in the first two rounds of the MLB Draft in 2020 and 2023, respectively. On Thursday, they received another boost as they were promoted to the advanced Class A Florida State League within hours of each other.

Jackson, a catcher who was a supplemental pick by the Reds, (65th overall), joined the Daytona Tortugas. Aidan, a third baseman who was selected 27th overall by the Phillies in this year’s draft, joined the Clearwater Threshers.

Basketball

Patel’s Triplett transfers to Carrollwood Day

Travis Triplett, a standout for Patel last season, has decided to join Carrollwood Day for his sophomore year. The 6-foot-8 forward was a key contributor for the Trailblazers last season, averaging 11 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

Brooks DeBartolo to host inaugural boys basketball alumni game

Brooks DeBartolo is having its first alumni boys basketball game on Nov. 11. Those interested must have played and graduated from the school.  For more information contact coach Lavel Dumont via his twitter account (@CoachLCDumont).

The Hoop Vibe Fall Showcase set for Sept. 15

The Hoop Vibe’s Fall Showcase for boys basketball players will be on Sept. 17 at The Big House in Tavares. The event is for players in the 2024-27 classes. The cost is $130 before Sept. 1 and $140 after that.

FHSAA seeks Student-Athlete Advisory Committee nominees

The Florida High School Athletic Association is looking for nominees for its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The nominations are due Aug. 24. 

TBBCA Showcase set for Sept. 9

The Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association will hold its annual showcase on Sept. 9 at the All People’s Life Center and Gymnasium in Tampa. Registration information has already been sent to all high school coaches. The girls check in at 9 a.m. the day of the showcase and are on the court from 10 a.m.-noon. The boys check in at 1 p.m. and are on the court from 2-4. Last year, 13 girls and 26 boys who attended went on to play in college. 

Pinellas Park to host alumni baseball game in November

Pinellas Park is planning its first-ever alumni game on Nov. 4. Those interested must have played and graduated from the school. For more information contact coach Ryan Griffith via the team’s Twitter account (PPark_BB). 

Clearwater Academy looking to fill football schedule

Wiregrass Ranch still looking for boys basketball games

Erriyon Knighton reaches 200m final at World Championships

The 19-year-old sprinter from Hillsborough, who impressed at the Tokyo Olympics, qualified for the 200m final at the World Athletics Championships. Knighton won his semifinal heat in 19.98 seconds, the fourth-fastest among finalists.

Volleyball

Local stars meet at Road 2 Tampa Bay Invitational

A pair of former local volleyball stars will square off tonight at the Road 2 Tampa Bay Invitational.

Liv Mogridge (Steinbrenner), who now plays for Georgia Tech, will face Lauren Lewis (Osceola), who is a freshman at USF.

The Yellow Jackets and Bulls play each other in tonight’s opening match at 6 p.m. at Amalie Arena. Florida plays Penn State in tonight’s other match at 8.
