Top 10 games from Friday

1. Armwood 34, Venice 25: Relying on a punishing ground attack, the Hawks built a 27-point lead in the first half, enough to hold off a rally from the defending Class 4S state semifinalist Indians. Girard Pringle led Armwood with more than 300 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the ground.

2. Northeast 10, Lakewood 6: The Vikings did something no other Pinellas County team has been able to do since 2018: beat Lakewood. Down 6-3, Northeast scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to snap the Spartans’ 24-game win streak against county foes.

3. Gulf 35, Mitchell 34: Building off last year’s playoff berth, the Buccaneers started the season off strong by knocking off one of Pasco County’s premier programs. Trailing 21-19, Gulf scored twice to build a two-score lead, then held a furious rally that ended on a failed two-point conversion by the Mustangs late in the fourth quarter.

4. Jesuit 34, Wharton 20: The game was much closer than the score indicated. The host Tigers trailed 20-19 in the fourth quarter after missed extra point but managed to surge ahead thanks to a pair of Will Griffin touchdowns (one passing, one throwing).

5. Clearwater Central Catholic 21, Berkeley Prep 14: The defending Class 1M state semifinalist Marauders had to battle back from an early 14-0 deficit against one of their fiercest rivals. CCC’s come back was fueled largely by a rushing attack that produced all three scores.

6. Tampa Bay Tech 28, Plant 22: For the second straight season, the Titans beat the Panthers in their opener by a touchdown or less. Instead of rallying to win like last year, Tampa Bay Tech had to hold off a comeback to prevail.

7. Tarpon Springs 17, St. Petersburg 14: What a difference a year makes. After losing 48-12 to the Green Devils in last season’s opener, the Spongers exacted revenge with a win to show just how much they have turned things around under second-year coach Jeremy Frioud.

8. Plant City 20, Newsome 18: It was a successful opener for first-year Raiders coach Terrence Hicks, whose team came back from an early deficit to win.

9. Palm Harbor University 28, Osceola 14: The Hurricanes, who went 6-4 last season, continued their momentum with a win over the Warriors that served as payback for last year’s loss in the opener.

10. Nature Coast 35, Poinciana 14: The Sharks were the only Hernando County public school to win on Friday. Better still, the victory for first-year Nature Coast coach Rob Kazmier came against a team that went 8-2 last season.
