Mitchell (0-1) at East Lake (0-1), Friday 7:30
Three things to know
Bouncing back
Both teams lost their season openers against quality opponents. The Mustangs put together a furious rally that fell short when they failed to convert on a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter of a 35-34 loss to Gulf. The Eagles, meanwhile, were beat by Lake Gibson, 24-13. Neither team wants to start 0-2, which gives even more meaning to this year’s matchup.
Young guns
Mitchell and East Lake each have young playmaking quarterbacks. Cayden Thomas, a sophomore for the Mustangs, threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns against Gulf in the opener. Eagles freshman Landen Holley has offers from Central Florida, Florida and South Florida, among others. He is splitting time with Eli Millian. In last week’s opener against Lake Gibson, Holley threw for 24 yards and had two interceptions.
Cross-county rivalry
Though East Lake is in Pinellas County and Mitchell is in Pasco County, the schools are less than six miles apart. Their proximity makes them natural rivals. In fact, many of the players have known each other since elementary school and have played together in youth leagues. Still, they did not start their friendly feud until 2019. Last year, the Eagles won for the first time, snapping a three-game losing streak in the series.
