In the news

Carrollwood Day, Calvary Christian shine at Nike Tournament of Champions

After reaching the region final last season with a lineup that included several returners, Carrollwood Day had the talent to take the next step, especially with the bolster of a few transfers.

To prepare for a potential state title run, the Patriots put together a schedule that yields few easy nights, starting with the Nike Tournament of Champions this past weekend.

Carrollwood Day passed its first test, finishing as runnerup in the National Division, the highest of any area – or state – team.

The Patriots went 5-1 in the platinum bracket, including wins against Skutt Catholic (Nebraska), ranked No. 12 nationally, and defending state finalists Hegarty and Viera. The only loss came in the final against Cornerstone Christian (Texas), the nation’s top-ranked team.

Lydia Chinchar and Sarah Dibbs-Frantz, who played pivotal roles in Carrollwood Day’s run to the title match, were each named to the all-tournament team.

Winning a state title will not be easy considering the Patriots are in one of the toughest regions (Class 3A-2) in the state.

In fact, two other area teams in the region – Calvary Christian and Berkeley Prep – also had strong performances at the Nike tournament.

The Warriors won the gold bracket, highlighted by wins over Skutt Catholic, Berkeley Prep and Miami Westminster Christian. Taylor Parks, a Florida commit, was named to the all-tournament team for Calvary Christian.

The Buccaneers, led by all-tournament selection Izzy Mogridge, were the runnnerup in the gold bracket.

Plant, which won a state title in 2021 and advanced to the region finals last year, finished third in the same bracket.
