Mitchell (2-1) at Wiregrass Ranch (1-1), 7:30

Three things to know

Rivalry renewed

Because of district obligations, the teams did not face each other for a three-year period from 2017-19. The series resumed in 2020 and has continued since. Mitchell has won two of the past three meetings, including a 50-6 romp last year. Expect a closer tonight outcome considering how much Wiregrass Ranch’s roster has improved with the bolster of some high-profile transfers.

Premier passers

Both teams have quality quarterbacks who each can rack up yards in the passing game. Wiregrass Ranch’s Luke Knight, a senior, knows what it is like to guide teams to playoff runs. He led Jesuit to a state title in 2021 and helped Merritt Island reach the region quarterfinals last season. The Army commit already has thrown for 460 yards and three touchdowns in his first two games this season. Mitchell’s Cayden Thomas, a sophomore, is a first-year starter who can make plays with arm — and his feet. In three games, Thomas has racked up a combined 687 yards passing and 103 rushing and thrown for eight touchdowns.

Delivering on defense

The offenses are prolific. After all, each team is averaging more than 30 points per game. The key will be which team can come up with enough key defensive stops. There are players capable of creating pressure. Mitchell’s Michael Houllis and Wiregrass Rach’s Ola Omoloye each have three sacks so far this season.
