Football: Hillsborough County Buzz — Oct. 21, 2023

Recaps. Scores. Schedules. It’s all here in the Hillsborough County football buzz.

Games of the night

Jesuit 35, Tampa Bay Tech 28

After losing to Treasure Coast and Miami Columbus by a combined 109-32, the rest of Hillsborough County had to look at the Tigers and engage in some wishful thinking.

Maybe Jesuit, which won a state title in 2021 and reached the state semifinals last year, would not be able to cope with the loss of so many Division I-A players. Maybe it would all be too much for the Tigers to handle.

Maybe the rest of the county should have known better.

Adjustments are what Jesuit does best. After all, the Tigers may change, but the results do not.

Since starting 1-2, Jesuit has won five straight games.

The turnaround started with a win over previously unbeaten Armwood in late September. The current streak continued by handing the Titans their first loss of the season Friday night.

Justin Thurman, a Notre Dame commit, scored three touchdowns for the second straight week. And Clemson recruit Drew Woodaz led an opportunistic defense by picking off a pass and recovering a fumble.

Clinging to a 28-21 lead, Jesuit gave itself enough of cushion to hold on thanks to a 40-yard touchdown pass from Will Griffin to Willy Suarez.

Berkeley Prep 42, East Bay 0

Last month, the Buccaneers lost to Calvary Christian and dropped out of the top spot in the Class 2M, Region 2 power rankings.

Since then, Berkeley Prep has won three straight games, the latest coming in its most dominant performance of the season.

On Friday, the Buccaneers relied primarily on the running on Joseph Troupe and Dallas Golden to build a 21-0 lead at the half. The defense did the rest, not only preserving the shutout but also scoring on Gavin Holman’s fumble return for the final touchdown of the night.

Gaither 35, Durant 21

The Cowboys, who are holding on to the eighth and final spot in the Class 3M, Region 3 power rankings, did their part to stay there, or move up, by handing the Cougars their second loss of the season.

End zones

Spoto beat Brandon for their first win of the season….Plant knocked off Steinbrenner for its seventh straight win.
