Here is the breakdown of the area teams playing in tonight’s region quarterfinals. The winners advance to Friday’s region semifinals.

The defending state champion Marauders have a difficult task to repeat with an opening round matchup against the Patriots, one of the top three ranked teams in the state, regardless of classification, according to the Florida High School Athletic Association’s final power rankings. This also is rematch of a meeting Carrollwood Day swept earlier this month.

No. 5 Tampa Prep (17-11) at No. 4 Sarasota Cardinal Mooney (20-7), 7

This is a rematch from a meeting the host Cougars won via a sweep last month. Since that loss, the Terrapins have gone 10-4 with wins against eight teams that made the playoffs this season.

The Warriors, who are among the top five in the state according to the FHSAA’s power rankings, are trying to get back on track after going 2-3 in their last five matches. All three losses were against area — and state — powerhouse programs. The Lions also are attempting to rebound after going to 1-2 in their last three matches.

The host Buccaneers, winners of four straight matches, are capable of reaching the state semifinals. After all, they have wins against region foes Carrollwood Day, Calvary Christian (twice) and Clearwater Central Catholic. The Cougars have some momentum with five straight wins, including payback for earlier losses to Community School of Naples and Naples First Baptist.
