Volleyball: Region finals preview — Oct. 31, 2023

Here is the breakdown of the area teams playing in tonight’s region finals. The winners advance to the state semifinals, held Nov. 6-10 at Polk State College in Winter Haven.

Tonight’s Area Region Semifinal Matches

Class 4A

Region 3
No. 2 Estero (19-9) at No. 1 Academy of the Holy Names (17-11), 7

The host Jaguars are on the verge of reaching the state semifinals for the fifth straight season. They face a familiar opponent in the Wildcats. The two teams have met twice in the past two years. Academy of the Holy Names won both matchups via sweeps — at a tournament this year and the region semifinals last season. But the Jaguars are aiming for more than a final four appearance. They want to get back to the finals after losing in last year’s state championship match. Academy of the Holy Names has plenty of momentum, winning six straight matches heading into tonight’s final.

Class 3A

Region 3
No. 3 Berkeley Prep (20-6) at No. 1 Carrollwood Day (28-2), 6:30

A premier matchup between two of the top five in the state, regardless of classification, according to the latest MaxPreps rankings. The winner will emerge from perhaps the toughest region in the state as the overwhelming favorite to take home the 3A title. This is the fourth meeting between the programs this season. The host Patriots have won two of the first three matchups. The Buccaneers’ win last month marked the only time Carrollwood Day fell to an area opponent this season.

Class 2A

Region 3

No. 2 Keswick Christian (25-5) at No. 1 Naples Seacrest Country Day (26-3), 7

This is the match the Crusaders have prepared for all season. Putting together a tough schedule meant Keswick Christian would be ready for any challenges, including another road trip to face the defending state champion in a region final rematch. The Crusaders overcame a slow start and have won 25 of their last 27 matches. Now, they will see if they can have a better outcome after being swept by the Stingrays last season.
