Volleyball: Region final preview (classes 7A-5A) — Nov. 1, 2023

Here is the breakdown of the area teams playing in tonight’s region semifinals. The winners advance to next week’s state semifinals.

Tonight’s Area Region final Matches

Class 7A

Region 3
No. 2 Venice (22-6) at No. 1 Plant (22-3), 7

This is one of the most anticipated matchups in the playoffs in any classification. These teams have met in the region final the past two seasons with winner going on to win the state title. Two years ago, the host Panthers won via sweep. Last season, Plant seemingly was on its way to another region final win. The Panthers, already up 2-1, was ahead 24-20 in the fourth set before the Indians came storming back to win that set, as well as the fifth, to take the match en route to last year’s state title. Both teams are ranked among the top three in the cassification and the top five overall in the state by MaxPreps.

Class 6A

Region 3
No. 5 Fort Myers (21-8) at No. 2 Bloomingdale (18-6), 7
The Bulls are trying to continue their magical run by reaching the state semifinals for the first time since 1994. They enter on a six-match win streak and are hosting tonight’s region final thanks to a series of upsets. The top seed, Punta Gorda Charlotte, lost in the region quarterfinals. That allowed Fort Myers, the No. 5 seed, to emerge on the side of the bracket. The Green Wave have won five straight matches, the closest coming in a five-set victory against Wharton in the quarterfinals.

Class 5A

Region 2
No. 2 Wesley Chapel (21-5) at No. 1 Merritt Island (22-6), 7

Last year, the Wildcats beat the Mustangs in a five-set thriller. To reach the state semifinals again, Wesley Chapel will have to go on the road in the rematch. The Wildcats prepared for this moment by playing Merritt in the regular season. Since being swept in that matchup, Wesley Chapel has won eight of its past nine matches. The Mustangs have won six straight matches.
