Region 2
No. 2 Carrollwood Dy (8-1) at No. 1 Clearwater Central Catholic (11-0), 7:30
One of the most anticipated matchups of the playoffs. In September, the Marauders beat the Patriots 28-27. Trailing by a touchdown, Carrollwood Day scored with nine seconds remaining, then decided to go for a two-point conversion and the win rather than tying it with an extra point. Xavier Goulbourne caught a pass from Jordan Magwood in the flat and was immediately met by Shamaar Rigby. Goulbourne’s elbow hit the turf just before the ball touched the goal line, allowing Clearwater Central Catholic to escape with the win. That helped the defending state finalist Marauders go undefeated in the regular season, clinch the district title and the top seed in the region. CCC’s perfect record, which came against nine teams that made the playoffs, is a big reason the team finished fifth in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s final rankings of the season. The Patriots, though, did not let their only loss of the season linger. They rolled through the rest of their schedule, including impressive victories over Calvary Christian, FSU High and Miami Gulliver Prep. Both quarterbacks are escape artists who can make plays through the air or on the ground. Magwood completed 16 of his 19 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns in the first matchup. He also ran for 82 yards on 12 carries. The Marauders’ Jershaun Newton accounted for 250 yards (131 rushing, 119 rushing) and threw for two touchdowns.
