Football: FHSAA overhauls playoff classifications — Dec. 12, 2023

For the third time in the last five years, the state’s playoff system for football will go through changes.

The Florida High School Athletic Association’s board of directors approved a proposal to scrap the Metro/Suburban divisions – which had been in place the past two seasons –  in favor of seven classifications (7A-1A), along with a rural division.

The board also voted to continue requiring football teams to schedule district games.

But the biggest potential playoff revamp – the creation of an open in all team sports – still is on hold.

Under that proposed system, the eight highest ranked teams by MaxPreps in each team sport at the end of the season will be grouped in an open division to compete in their own playoff bracket.

The board tabled that proposal in order to allow for discussion – and tweaks.
