Girls basketball: Hillsborough County player of the week — Jan. 15-20, 2024

Here are the nominees for the Hillsborough County girls basketball player of the week. Voting lasts until 9 a.m. Monday. 

Jolesa Birkhead, Jr., Winthrop College Prep: Scored a team-high 30 points in a win over Boca Raton Christian at the Sunshine Athletic Conference tournament. 

Danae Blacketer, Sr., Steinbrenner: Led the Warriors with 22 points and eight rebounds in a win over Robinson. 

Sydney Hurst, So., Wharton: Ended up with 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals in a win over Strawberry Crest. 

Noelle Mengel, So., Bloomingdale: Led the Bulls with 29 points, including 10-of-13 from the free throw line, and had six rebounds in a win over Seffner Christian. 

Aniyah Moreno, Sr., Armwood: Finished with a double-double (21 points, 12 rebounds) in a win over Middleton. 

Lucy Morey, Sr., Academy of the Holy Names: Averaged 17 points per game in wins over Tampa Prep and Largo to become the 18th player in school history to surpass 1,000 points in her career. 

Rye’keriyah Newton, Sr., Sickles: Finished with 10 points and eight rebounds in a win over Tampa Bay Tech. 

Ja’mya Roberson, Sr., Hillsborough: Recorded a double-double (11 steals, 10 assists) in a win over Freedom. 

Joslyn Thornton, Sr., Gaither: Led the Cowboys by recording a double-double (24 points, 11 rebounds) in a win over Chamberlain.
