Boys basketball: Tampa Bay area report — Feb. 2, 2024

The final week of the regular season means conference championship games. There are two contests involving area teams. Here is a preview for each one. 

Pinellas County Athletic Conference championship

Seminole (13-7) at Gibbs (20-3), 7:30

This is a rematch from a game the Gladiators won 58-39 in December. Gibbs, ranked sixth in Class 4A by MaxPreps, has not lost to an area opponent this season All three of the Gladiators’ losses were by single digit deficits, including two by a combined six points. They have been on a tear recently, winning nine straight games – the last seven by double digits. The Warhawks have won four of their last five games, the one loss coming by a point to Northeast earlier this week.

Western Conference championship

Wharton (17-7) at Leto (18-6), 8

This is the third meeting between the teams. Leto won the previous two (59-38 in December and 67-63 last month). Wharton has gone on to win nine straight games, including a pair of victories over Durant, the latest coming in the conference semifinals earlier this week. The Falcons, ranked eighth in Class 6A by MaxPreps, have won eight of their last nine games, the lone loss coming by six points to Sarasota during that stretch. In the conference semifinals, Leto beat Blake for the second time this season to advance to tonight’s final.
