Boys basketball: Tampa Bay area report — Feb. 23, 2024

The boys basketball playoffs continue tonight with the region finals. Here are the capsules for the Tampa Bay area teams playing in each class. The winners advance to the state semifinals starting next week.

Class 7A

Region 3
No. 6 Plant City (22-6) at No. 1 Winter Haven (25-1), 7

The Raiders have together at the right time, beating Plant (48-45) in the region quarterfinals and Sarasota Riverview ((58-51) in the semifinals. Now comes the hard part. Plant City has to travel to take on Winter Haven, the top seed in the region. The Blue Devils have won 26 straight games, including against two against Durant ad one against Sumner in the last three games.

The best season in Bulls history continues with their first region final appearance. Wiregrass Ranch, ranked No. 7 in the class by MaxPreps, enters on a six-game win streak. The Sharks also have some momentum with six straight wins.

The Falcons, who have already won Western Conference and district titles, will now try for their next goal: the state semifinals. Everything is set up for Leto to make that happen. The Falcons, ranked sixth in the class by MaxPreps, have won eight straight games and are undefeated at home. After starting 9-10, the Tarpons have turned things around with eight straight wins.

Since losing by two to rival Jesuit in the district final, the Yellow Jackets have been dominant, beating Zephyrhills and Wesley Chapel each by 16 or more points to get to the region final. Advancing to the state semifinals will not be easy. Leesburg has won five straight games, including a victory over Jesuit in the region semifinals.

The Warhawks are in the region final for the first time. To make its first state semifinal appearance, Seminole has travel to Cape Coral to take on Marier, the top seed in the region. After starting the season 7-7, the Tritons have rebounded to win 12 of their last 14 games.

The Gladiators are attempting to make the state semifinals for the third straight season. They have won each of their last four games by 21 or more points. The Eagles enter on a six-game win streak, including a 69-65 double overtime victory over Central in the region semifinals earlier this week.

The Griffins advanced by rallying to beat the Crusaders by two points in the region semifinals to extend their win streak to seven.
