Jesuit wins Ihrig-Shaler Cup

In a closely contested game, Jesuit pulled through in the final three minutes to retain the Ihrig-Shaler Cup with a 14-13 victory over rival Plant in the regular season finale for both teams.

Tied at 12 with 2:30 remaining, Cole Peck’s fifth goal of the night turned out to be winning one for the Tigers, who finish the regular season on a four-game win streak. Lleyton Hall also scored five goals to Jesuit on offense.

The Panthers, who started the season 11-0, have to regroup going into the district tournament after losing three of their last five matches.

Check it out

Former Blake/Bishop McLaughlin standout Emanuel Sharp made it to the Sweet 16 as a starter for Houston. During the Cougars’ postseason run, Sharp’s older brother D.J., who played at Tampa Prep, watched the games thousands of miles away in Israel. D.J. is playing professional basketball for an Israeli team and watching his brother play gave him a sense of normalcy amid the ongoing conflict, which was chronicled in this Paper City story.

Did you know?

Last week, Bert Kreischer, a former Jesuit baseball standout who is now a comedian known as “The Machine”, was on the The Rally, a sports talk show on the Stadium app.

The segment featured host Dani Klupenger with an in-studio appearance by former Reds closer Danny Graves.

As introductions were made, Kreischer mentioned he played against a Danny Graves in high school.

Turns out, The Machine had the right guy.

Graves is a former standout at Brandon. In fact, the two were both on the Tampa Bay Times’ and Tampa Tribune’s all-Hillsborough County baseball teams in 1991.
