Outlook
Both teams reached the state semifinals as district runnerups. The Mustangs, ranked sixth in the class by MaxPreps, bounced back from a loss in the 2A-9 district final to post three straight shutouts in regional play. The pitching staff is deep with Andreas Alvarez and Nick Bertrand leading the way. In the region final, Northside Christian outlasted Carrollwood Day to win 1-0 in nine innings. Alvarez, an Auburn signee, threw eight scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out six. Blake Borges drove in Luke Anderson for the lone run. The Mustangs are balanced on offense with three players — Donovan Fox, Dominic Fernandez and Wil Gregory — all hitting above .300. The state semifinal matchup will be a tough one against the Spartans, who are ranked first in the class and 12th overall in the state by MaxPreps. St. Johns Country Day recovered from a loss in the 2A-2 district to win its three regional games by a combined 24-10. Still, Northside Christian has confidence that it can compete — and beat — elite programs. After all, the Mustangs knocked off IMG’s national team earlier this season.
