Outlook

This is a rematch of last year’s state semifinal game. Berkeley Prep stood toe-to-toe with Chaminade before falling 23-21. The Lions, ranked first in the class, fifth overall in the state and 27th nationally by MaxPreps, are in the state championship game for the sixth straight season and are trying to win their fourth title in that span. The Buccaneers are one of three undefeated Hillsborough County teams playing in state title games the next two weeks (Jesuit and Tampa Bay Tech are the others). This is Berkeley Prep’s first title game appearance. The stage should not be too big for the Buccaneers considering they played — and beat — New Orleans Newman in a nationally televised game earlier this season.

Key matchup

Berkeley Prep’s strength on offense is its run game. The Buccaneers have run for 3,560 yards as a team, led by the dynamic duo of Travis Bates (1,803 yards, 21 touchdowns) and Xavier Townsend (1,188 yards, 18 touchdowns). Playing ball control is key in helping Berkeley Prep control the clock and keeping Chaminade’s ferocious pass rush at bay. The Lions have a pair of stellar defensive ends in Jamaal Johnson and Kenyatta Jackson Jr., who have combined for 32 of the team’s 68 sacks this season.
