Pinellas Park at Largo, 7
This marks the regular season debut for new Patriots coach Max Smith, a former assistant who was promoted in the offseason. Pinellas Park has won the past three meetings, the last two each by double digits. A matchup to watch is Patriots running back Isaiah Hampton going up against the Packers’ linebacking duo of Adarius Hayes and Zayvion McCluster.
Lakeland Victory Christian at Calvary Christian, 7
The host Warriors hold a 2-1 advantage in the last three meetings. Two of those contests were each decided by a touchdown or less. The opener also is a chance for Calvary Christian quarterback Jacob Drackett to build off last year’s success when he threw for more than 1,800 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Berkeley Prep at Clearwater Central Catholic, 7:30
One of the premier rivalries in the area. The Buccaneers have won the past three meetings by double digits, including last year’s 36-22 victory in the region final. The best matchup will be in the trenches with Berkeley Prep’s defensive line, led by five-star recruit Keon Keeley, going up against a veteran Marauders offensive line that includes Shane Elam and Kevin Terry.
East Lake at Lake Gibson, 7:30
The Eagles have been flying under the radar. They can certainly gain some notoriety with a win against the Braves, who reached the state semifinals last season.
Lakeland at Clearwater, 7:30
For the second straight season, the Tornadoes open their season against the Dreadnaughts. The matchup is a good gauge to see where Clearwater stands against a program that is favored to reach the title game in Class 4 of the newly formed Suburban Division.
