Outlook

The Spartans let a first half lead slip away in a loss to Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons in last year’s state semifinals. The painful memories of a  game that got away served as a powerful motivator. Now, Lakewood will try to make its first state final in a new classification and district (Class 2-8) in the newly formed Metro Division. The Spartans likely will have to have another powerhouse program from Fort Lauderdale or Miami to win it all. They certainly have the talent to do it. Anthony Colandrea, a Virginia commit, threw for more than 3,000 yards and 41 touchdowns last year. The senior signal caller picked up where he left off by throwing for a combined 880 yards and 12 touchdowns in the spring game against American Heritage and the kickoff classic against Palmetto. There also is some balance with Montravious Lloyd, a Pittsburgh commit, returning and Tra’quan Johnson transferring from Gibbs. The receiving corps, led by Antonio Bell, Solomon Lowery Jr. and Shamar Rigby. The leaders on the offensive line are Isaiah Johnson, Ray Lane and Jaden Ledbetter. Defensively, the line is a strength with Florida commit Isaiah Nixon and Taveon Wheeler both returning. Cedric Augustine, a transfer from Palmetto, headlines the linebacking unit. A pair of transfers, Amare Garrett (Pinellas Park) and Gage Nix (Clearwater), help to shore up the secondary.
