Streak snapped

Jesuit, which went undefeated en route to winning a state title last year, put together a schedule that yielded few easy nights.

The Tigers got through their first two tests, defeating defending region finalist Wharton and defending state finalist Treasure Coast.

Those two victories extended Jesuit’s overall win streak to 17 and its regular season win streak to 29.

Another challenge awaited the Tigers this past week when they traveled to Miami to take defending state semifinalist Columbus in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Jesuit went ahead 15-7 in the second quarter, then watched as Columbus scored 25 unanswered for a 32-15 victory.

The loss snapped both streaks. And it doesn’t get any easier. The Tigers’ next game is against Armwood in two weeks (Sept. 23).

Falcons find continued success

After beating Brandon last week, Leto made it two in a row with a 19-12 victory over Freedom.

It marked the first time since 2007 the Falcons have won two straight.

The success gives Leto and new coach Ron Perisee plenty of momentum for the rest of the season.

The Falcons will need it considering their next three opponents – Strawberry Crest, Alonso and Jesuit – are a combined 8-1.

Wharton gets defensive

After losing to Jesuit in the season opener, Wharton has bounced back in a big way, beating Plant City and Gaither by a combined 69-7.

The Wildcats’ defense has been key in getting things back on track.

Against the Raiders two weeks ago, Booker Pickett recorded five sacks to led Wharton in a shutout victory. The defense got in on the scoring against Gaither with a fumble return by Lajessie Harold and an interception return by Zyon Nobles each going for touchdowns.
