PTP Campus Tour: Jesuit at Tampa Catholic

Jesuit (6-3) at Tampa Catholic (7-1), 7

Three things to know

Snapping the streak

In 1999, Tampa Catholic, in danger of their first losing season in five seasons, turned all of their attention to beating their biggest high school football rival.

Everything worked. The Crusaders beat Jesuit 26-7 to close out the regular season.

There were no close calls, no thrilling comebacks.

But that game was a significant moment in the series between the two Hillsborough County Catholic schools.

It was the last time Tampa Catholic beat its nemesis.

The Tigers’ win streak is by far the longest in the team’s regular-season meetings. This run has been so long that the current players were not even born when it started.

Tonight, the Crusaders seem to be in position to at least have a chance to snap the streak. They have won six straight games and are averaging 41 points per game during that stretch.

Jesuit, the defending state champions, went through a stretch earlier this season where it lost three of four games. The Tigers have rebounded from that slump to win three straight games, including victories over Gaither and defending state semifinalist Tampa Bay Tech.

A pair of prime time prospects

Two of the nation’s top linebackers will square off tonight.

Jesuit’s Todd Bowles, a Georgia commit, and Tampa Catholic’s Lewis Carter, who is headed to Oklahoma, are each ranked among the nation’s top 10 linebackers in the 2023 class according to 247Sports.

Bowles, the son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles, has 55 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery this season.

Carter, a two-way standout, has racked up 77 tackles, four sacks and two interceptions on defense and 477 yards and 12 touchdowns on offense.
