Flag football: Lennard beats state powerhouse Robinson in overtime

Last year, Lennard nearly pulled off an upset of perennial flag football powerhouse Robinson, losing by two points in regulation.

On Monday, the two teams met for the first time since that thriller in a matchup of unbeatens.

Once again, the game was tight, this time going to overtime.

Trailing 13-6, the Longhorns tied it on an Abby Elwell touchdown pass to Grayce Bird.

That left Lennard coach Travis Combs with a decision to make.

He chose not to play it safe.

Opting for a two-point conversion – and the win – the Longhorns got it when Elwell threw to Kate Keith for the successful attempt.

The 14-13 overtime victory over the six-time defending Class 1A state champion Knights was huge for a Lennard program that was on the rise but still in search of a signature win against one of Hillsborough County’s premier programs.

It was just the second time in the past 79 games that Robinson lost a game. And it was the first time the Knights lost at home since 2012.

Elwell and Bird played pivotal roles in Monday’s breakthrough performance. That passing combination scored both touchdowns, including the Longhorns’ only one in regulation.

Since taking over the program in 2020, Combs has made steady progress, guiding Lennard to a combined 36-10 record entering Monday.

The Longhorns were dominant in their perfect start, outscoring opponents by a combined 72-32.

They kept their unbeaten record intact by winning the one that mattered most.

Still, it does not get any easier.

On Wednesday, Lennard faces Alonso in another matchup of undefeated teams.
