The girls lacrosse district tournaments wrapped up this past week. Now, it is time for the playoffs starting with the region quarterfinals for Class 2A on Tuesday and the 1A on Friday. Here are the Tampa Bay area teams that won district titles last week.
Class 2A, District 9
Champion: Steinbrenner
The Warriors, whose only losses were each by single digits to a pair of out-of-state teams, entered the tournament ranked No. 4 in the class by MaxPreps.
As the top seed, Steinbrenner was the overwhelming favorite to take home the title. The Warriors did just that, beating Wharton 17-5 in the semifinals and Mitchell 17-3 in the final.
Nine of Steinbrenner’s 12 wins this season have been by double digits.
Taylor LaPointe had six draw controls and six goals to lead the Warriors in the title game against the Mustangs.
Class 2A, District 10
Champion: Plant
The Panthers, ranked No. 5 in the class by MaxPreps, beat Newsome 12-6 in the final in an anticipated matchup between the top two seeds in the district.
It was the second time Plant beat the Wolves this season. Unlike the first meeting, a 13-12 thriller, the Panthers had more breathing room by outscoring Newsome 7-3 in the second half to pull away in the title game.
The offense was balanced with Plant having four players score two or more goals in the final, led by Ashlyn Bell and Sophie Weil, who each had three.
Class 1A, District 5
Champion: Cypress Creek
The Coyotes, the No. 3 seed in the district, survived three close contests, beating Pasco, Tampa Catholic and Berkeley Prep by a combined nine goals to take home the title.
Fast starts helped Cypress Creek, especially in the semifinals and final.
Against the Crusaders in the semifinals, the Coyotes built a 6-2 halftime then held on to win 11-7. In the final, Cypress Creek went up 4-1 at the half, enough of a cushion to get past the Buccaneers 10-8.
Class 1A, District 9
Champion: Academy of the Holy Names
The Jaguars showed why they were the top seed, cruising to a 19-4 win over Clearwater Central Catholic in the semifinals and beating Calvary Christian 13-8 in the final.
That was the second time Academy of the Holy Names knocked off the Warriors this season, the first also coming by five goals in the opener. It also extended the Jaguars’ current win streak to four games.
Lauren Brown had six goals and three assists and Lauren Martinez added four goals and an assist to lead Academy of the Lakes in scoring in the title game.
