Outlook
After reaching the state semifinals last year, the Gryphons are on the verge of winning their first state title. Sickles took the next step by beating Winter Springs in Tuesday’s semifinals. Caden McDonald was one hit away from a perfect game and recorded six strikeouts on the mound. The senior also did his part at the plate by going 2-for-2 with a solo homer that provided all the support he needed. The Gryphons now have won 21 straight games, by far the longest streak in the area this season. The Hawks, ranked fifth in the class by MaxPreps, have won 10 straight games, the last one coming against defending champion Miami Doral in the state semifinals. Viera is used to playing in close games, beating Lake Minneola and Land O’ Lakes each by a run in the region semifinals and final, respectively.
