Flag football: Alonso’s Mieke Rowe, Matt Hernandez win state honors

Alonso’s flag football team is starting to accumulate the accolades befitting an undefeated state champion.

Mieke Rowe, who led the Ravens to their first title since 2019, was named Miss Flag Football, an award given annually by the Florida Dairy Farmers to the top overall player in the state.

Alonso coach Matt Hernandez won the overall coach award.

Rowe, a senior, threw for 5,016 yards, 95 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions this past season. She also ran for 205 yards and scored four touchdowns on the ground.

Hernandez guided the Ravens to a 23-0 record, a No. 1 national ranking and the school’s third title in the past five seasons (the 2020 season was cut short due to the pandemic).

They also were named the Class 2A player and coach of the year, respectively. Those awards were selected through voting from a statewide panel of flag football coaches and media representatives. They went through another round of voting to determine the overall winners.

Rowe beat out the Robinson’s Katejion Robinson, the Class 1A state player of the year who helped the Knights win their seventh straight title this year.

Hernandez finished ahead of the Knight’s Josh Saunders, the 1A coach of the year who led the program to their eighth overall title, extending what is already a state record for most team titles.
