Outlook
Plant, which is in the state championship game for just the third time in school history, will try to win its first title in the sport today. The other final appearances came in 1991 and 2000. Each time the Panthers lost by six or more runs. Plant, ranked second in the class by MaxPreps, has won 19 straight games heading into today’s title matchup. Plant extended that streak by beating Wellington 2-1 in eight innings in Friday’s semifinal. Trailing 1-0, the Panthers scored once in the sixth inning to tie the game and came through with the winning run in the eighth. Teagan Riley drove in the tying run and Lauren Luciani drove in the winning run on a walk-off hit. Gracie Ciccarello also stood out on offense, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. On the mound, Addison Swink and Cassidy Masters combined on a three-hitter with seven strikeouts. Spanish River, which lost three straight games in mid-April, rebounded to win seven of its last eight games. The late season surge was enough to secure the seventh seed in the region. Since then, the Sharks have been on a tear with the biggest win coming in Friday’s semifinal against Lake Brantley, which was ranked first in the class and 13th nationally by MaxPreps.
