Family bond
Land O’ Lakes’ coach Dan Goodspeed’s son, Grady, played in a flag football game during halftime of the Buccaneers’ preseason opener against the Steelers.
It was a special moment for Goodspeed, who played for the Bucs during their Super Bowl season in 2002.
Goodspeed also coaches his son’s flag football team, which is part of the Pirates Bay NFL Flag 5 vs. 5 boys and girls league.
But Goodspeed was unable to be on the field because he was coaching the Gators during their scrimmage Friday night.
Alumni Update
A pair of former area stars, offensive lineman Mason Cole (East Lake/Michigan) and receiver Diontae Johnson (Lennard/Toledo), started for the Steelers in Friday’s preseason against the Buccaneers. Cole provided protection for quarterback Kenny Pickett, who completed six of his seven passes for 70 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive. Three of those completions went to Johnson, who totaled 32 yards.
