AHN coach Jose Bautista honored by Blue Jays

Jose Bautista, a six-time all-star with the Toronto Blue Jays, was honored on Saturday when he was inducted into the organization’s Level of Excellence.

Since retiring, Bautista has lived in Tampa and currently coaches Academy of the Holy Names’ middle school baseball team.

Sun Bash sets field for Tampa Bay tournament

Sun Bash, which is holding a Tampa Bay area boys tournament for the seventh straight year, announced the field of 18 participating in the three-day event, held Dec. 28-30 at Northside Christian.

The teams are: Blake, Boca Ciega, Calvary Christian, Coral Gables, Countryside, East Lake, Gateway Charter, Gibbs, Green Level (NC), Lake Worth, North Tampa Christian, Northside Christian, Palm Harbor University, Providence, Shaback Christian (Md.), St. Petersburg, St. Xavier (Ky.) and Windermere.

Football

Tampa Catholic’s TJ Moore to play in All-American Bowl

TJ Moore, an elite receiver, accepted an invitation to play in the All-American Bowl, an annual game for the top 100 high school players in the nation.

The Tampa Catholic senior, who committed to Clemson this summer, is ranked as a four-star prospect by nearly every major recruiting service.

The All-American Game will be held Jan. 6, 2024 in San Antonio are air live on NBC.

Strong start in scrimmages

East Bay and Strawberry Crest each held scrimmages on Saturday to train referees with the West Coast Officials Association.

Hillsborough gained momentum early with first-year starting quarterback Darryon Jones hitting Jay Cummings on a touchdown on the opening possession against the host Chargers.

Fan Votes For Top Team Continue In Each County

The fan votes, which started last month, continue with the championship rounds in HernandoPasco and Pinellas counties and the semifinals in Hillsborough County.

Golf

Stone makes the U.S. Women’s Amateur final

Latanna Stone, a former standout at Cambridge Christian, continued her exhilarating run at the US Women’s Amateur by reaching the championship match.

Stone, who currently plays for LSU, advanced by getting past Stanford’s Rachel Heck in the semifinals. Stone already has beaten three of the top 25Megan ranked players in the world during the tournament.

That sets up an all-SEC final with Stone facing Auburn’s Megan Schofill. The two have been close friends since the 8th grade.

Fan votes for top team continue in each county

The fan votes, which started last month, continue with the championship round in HernandoPasco and Pinellas counties and the semifinal round in Hillsborough County.
