Calvary Christian’s Ace Taylor has record-setting night

Ace Taylor, one of the area’s most prolific scorers, set the record at Calvary Christian for most points in a game with 46 in a 78-74 win over Calvary Christian. 

The 6-foot-6 senior was nearly perfect from the free throw line, hitting 19 of his 20 attempts. He also had 12 rebounds and seven assists. 

Taylor currently is averaging 23.8 points per game and has helped the Warriors win their last three games. 

Tampa Catholic gets past rival Jesuit

In the first of two meetings with rival Jesuit this season, Tampa Catholic started off strong then held on for a 54-51 victory in front of a sold out crowd. 

The Crusaders built a 27-23 lead at the half, fell behind 40-37 at the end of the third quarter and rallied in the fourth to extend their nine-year win streak in the series. 

Isaiah Campbell-Finch led the Crusaders with 21 points and four rebounds. 

What to watch tonight
Sunlake (13-7) at North Tampa Christian (20-2), 5

The Seahawks have had a strong second half to the season, winning six of their last seven games. Maintaining that momentum could be challenging against the Titans, who are ranked fourth in Class 2A by MaxPreps and have won six straight games. 

Admiral Farragut (8-5) at Lakeside Christian (14-5), 7

This is a rematch from a game the host Lions won 63-57 last month. Both teams have started the new year off right. The Blue Jackets have won five of their last six games while Lakeside Christian is on a five-game win streak.

Bloomingdale wins Western Conference title

The Bulls capped off a stellar regular season by winning the Western Conference title for Hillsborough County public school programs. 

In the semifinals, Bloomingdale beat Steinbrenner 4-0. Trevor Quinn scored twice and Giovanni Morales and Nate Grossglass each added goals. 

The momentum continued in the final with Morales connecting on two goals and Stefan Vera scoring once in a 3-1 victory over Wharton. 

The Bulls (15-1-1) head into this week’s Class 6A, District 11 tournament on an eight-match win streak. 

Osceola takes home PCAC title

Locked in a scoreless duel with Palm Harbor University that lasted through regulation and overtime, Osceola finally through in penalty kicks (7-6) to win the shutout for the Pinellas County Athletic Conference title.

The Warriors hope to use that momentum heading into this week’s Class 5A, District 9 tournament.

Bloomingdale gets past Seffner Christian in premier matchup

The Bulls maintained their perfect record by beating Seffner Christian in an anticipated battle between arguably the top two teams in Hillsborough County. 

Trailing 29-27 at the half, Bloomingdale rallied by outscoring the Crusaders 19-9 in the fourth quarter. The Bulls did it by going 17-of-21 as a team from the free throw line. 

Noelle Mengel led Bloomingdale with 29 points and six rebounds and Izellah Kendrick added 20 points and eight rebounds. 

The Bulls (20-0) currently are ranked fourth in Class 6A by MaxPreps.

Clearwater Central Catholic (15-2) at Palm Harbor University (13-6), 7:30

The Marauders, winners of five straight games, have only lost once to a Pinellas County opponent this season. The host Hurricanes also are on a five-game win streak – all by 18 or more points.

Palm Harbor University wins PCAC title

Relying on their defense and timely scoring, the Hurricanes beat Osceola 3-0 to take home the Pinellas County Athletic Conference title. 

Makenna Egan, Kassie Fragale and Abbi Robbins each scored goals and Keely Cash made 10 saves to record the shutout for the Hurricanes. 

Newsome cruises to Western Conference title

The Wolves shutout Steinbrenner and Strawberry Crest to win the Western Conference title to extend their win streak to 12 matches. 

Newsome (16-1), ranked fourth in Class 7A by MaxPreps, has blanked its opponents in six of the last seven matches heading into this week’s 7A-6 district tournament. 

Wrestling

Jesuit finishes second in dual meet state tournament

The Tigers were the runnereup in the Class 2A dual meet state tournament after falling 31-26 to rival Lake Gibson in the championship match. 

The teams split their 14 bouts with several coming down to the final seconds or going into overtime.
