NCAA tournament: Tampa trio to watch

Three former Hillsborough County players – Johni Broome, Dillon Mitchell and Emmanuel Sharp – have all played pivotal roles as starters in college this season. This week, they try to help their teams advance in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. Here is a look at the trio.

Johni Broome, Auburn

The former Plant City and Tampa Catholic standout, who led the Crusaders to the state championship game during the 2019-20 season, is continuing to dominate at the college level. As a freshman at Morehead State, Broome was named the Ohio Valley Conference freshman of the year and was one of only three freshmen to ever be named the conference’s tournament MVP. After leading the Eagles to the NCAA tournament, Broome transferred to Auburn. This season, he was named first-team all-SEC and consensus third team selection on AP’s All-American team. Last week, he took home SEC tournament MVP honors after leading the Tigers to the title.  Auburn, a No. 4 seed, plays Yale in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday at 4:15.

Dillon Mitchell, Texas

After playing at Sickles, Mitchell transferred to Bishop McLaughlin, where he led the Hurricanes to the Class 3A state championship game during the 2020-21 season. He then went on to Montverde and became a McDonald’s All-American and was named MVP of the Jordan Brand Classic. At Texas, he started all 38 games last season, setting school records for most games played and started by a freshman. This season, he is averaging 10.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for the No.7 seed Longhorns, who play Colorado St. in the first round of the NCAA tournament today at 6:50.

Emanuel Sharp, Houston

At Blake and Bishop McLaughlin, Sharp became one of the state’s most prolific scorers. That helped him win Class 5A state player of the year honors with the Yellow Jackets as a junior (2019-20) and 3A player of the year with the Hurricanes as a senior (2020-21). After redshirting his first season with the Cougars, Sharp made an impact, becoming an American Athletic Conference all-freshman team selection this past season. He currently is averaging 12.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game for No.1 seed Houston, which plays Longwood in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday at 9:20.

Leto legends

Earlier this month, Leto senior stars Daniel Delgardo III and Derek Delgardo Jr. were each honored during the school’s spring break pep rally.

The celebration included having their jersey numbers retired.

Derek finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,986 points and Daniel was second with 1,882. Together, they led the Falcons to conference and district titles and helped reach the region finals this season.
