Boys basketball: Gibbs’ Jacob Daniels, Larry Murphy win 4A state honors — April 3, 2024

Gibbs’ boys basketball team is starting to accumulate the accolades befitting a state champion.

Jacob Dainels, who led the Gladiators to their first state title since 1969 last month, was named the Class 4A state player of the year by the Florida Dairy Farmers.

That was not all.

Gibbs coach Larry Murphy also was named the 4A coach of the year.

Daniels, a junior guard, averaged 18.4 points, 3 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.5 steals this season. In the 4A title game, he led all scorers with 22 points.

For Murphy, this is the first time he has won the coach of the year award in his class. After leading the Gladiators to the state semifinals each of the previous two seasons, Murphy guided them to a 27-5 record and got past the semifinal hurdle by outlasting North Broward Prep in triple overtime.

In the final, Gibbs rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to beat nemesis Andrew Jackson for that elusive title.

The winners in each classification were selected through voting from a statewide panel of boys basketball coaches and media representatives. They are now eligible to be named the overall winner in the state, which will go through another round of voting and likely be announced later this week.
