In an effort to help increase participation in girls basketball, particularly at the junior varsity level, the Florida High School Athletic Association passed a measure that allows players a maximum of six quarters of play combined between junior varsity and varsity on game days. That means a player can play a full game at one level (varsity or junior varsity) and be on the roster for at least two quarters in another level. For years, girls basketball has struggled at the junior varsity level, so much that a few schools in each area county have struggled to field JV teams. The new rule, similar to the one already in place for football, could help by boosting numbers.
