Player of the week — Feb. 21-26

Lizzie Billett, Jr., Mitchell

Position: Pitcher

The lowdown: In her first start of the season, Billett threw a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in a win over Hudson. Fans were impressed. Billett had 40 percent of the votes (1,081) in the Pasco County player of the week poll to beat out River Ridge’s Jacqleen Golden, who had 36 percent (993 votes).

Preseason pitcher of the year

Mia Fields, So., Land O’ Lakes

Last season, Fields ended up with an 11-4 record last season and had 1.97 ERA while striking out 67 in 96 innings for the state finalist Gators. Fans paid attention. Fields had 48 percent of the votes (1,845) in the Pasco County preseason pitcher of the year poll to beat out Academy at the Lakes’ Sydney Klein, who had 31 percent (1,206 votes).

Nehanda Lewis, Sr., Land O’ Lakes

The UCF signee finished last season with a .477 average and had 40 RBIs and 20 stolen bases for the state finalist Gators. Fans took notice. Lewis had 34 percent of the votes (751) to beat out teammate Emma Nixon, who had 16 percent (362 votes).

After starting 0-5, the Sharks are turning things around. They won their second straight Monday night, beating Tarpon Spring 18-2. Paris Sager had a double and five RBIs and Lilly Klyczek went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored to lead the offense.

P/SS Faith Jetter, Jr., Fivay

Threw four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and recording six strikeouts, on the mound and went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored at the plate in a win over Hudson.

The Royal Knights bounced back from last week’s loss to Wiregrass Ranch in a big way, beating defending state finalist Land O’ Lakes 4-2 on Tuesday to climb above .500 for the season (2-1). Jacqleen Golden and MacKenzie Vozdecky each had two hits and Jordan Sheets allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out eight to lead River Ridge.

Prime time player of the night

Brianna Baer, Sr., Wiregrass Ranch

The outfielder has been on a tear at the plate. On Monday, she went 2-for-3 with five RBIs in a win over Pasco. Baer followed that up by going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored in a 10-2 win over Sunlake on Tuesday.
