Patrick Hopkins, Sr., Lakeside Christian

Position: Pitcher

Season stats: 2.84 ERA, 18 strikeouts

The lowdown: Two weeks ago, Hopkins threw a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts in a five-inning win over Gibbs. Fans took notice. Hopkins had 46 percent of the votes (4,526) in the Pinellas County baseball player of the week poll to beat out Keswick Christian’s Tyler Wabnitz, who had 32 percent (3,218).

The Packers had to replace 10 seniors who graduated. Losing that much experience on the roster was going to take a toll, at least early in the season. But after starting 1-3, Largo is starting to turn things around. The Packers have won five of their last six games. On Tuesday, they broke open a close game by scoring three runs in the fifth inning and adding another in the sixth to beat Clearwater 5-1 and extend their win streak to four.

Threw three scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out six on the mound and went 2-for-3 with three RBIs at the plate in a win over Gibbs.
